Herefordshire cider and perry maker scoops prestigious CAMRA gong.

Tom Oliver of Herefordshire, UK-based Oliver's Cider and Perry has beaten off nine other as yet unnamed finalists to land the Campaign for Real Ale's (CAMRA) 2013 Pomona Award for his contribution to promoting real cider and perry.

Named after the Roman goddess of orchards, the Pomona Award, so a CAMRA press release states, was presented to Oliver "for his work in securing the existence of UK orchards and preserving the tradition of perry production for future generations to enjoy".

"I am very pleased to have been given the Pomona Award, especially as it puts perry to the fore," he says.

"In fact, a good number of the previous recipients have perry and perry pears close to their hearts."

"I think this goes to show that the support and momentum generated by CAMRA, their Cider and Perry Committee and entire membership is instrumental in sustaining the availability and demand for perry, without which there is less point in commercial production and consequently the planting of new perry pear orchards."

"Hats off to CAMRA."

Quite.

And hats off to you, sir.

"Tom has worked tirelessly to ensure the future of British cider and perry, not only in the protection of UK orchards, but also by producing a charter for the Guild of Craft Cider and Perry Producers which outlines the standards to which traditional cider and perry producers should adhere," adds Andrea Briers, chair of CAMRA's Cider and Perry Committee.

"These include using only British apples and pears and fermenting from fresh pressed apple or pear juice only."

In addition to "selling well in the UK", Oliver's Cider and Perry, the press release continues, "is becoming a hit with drinkers further afield too", proving popular as far away as the US, "where cider and perry drinking is really beginning to take off".

This is certainly not the first award that Oliver's Cider and Perry has received this year, with the company in May winning the 2013 Champion Cidermaker Cup as part of the Hereford Cider Museum International Cider & Perry Competition.

According to the company's FaceBook page, from where we grabbed the above pic, the prize was bestowed in recognition of "a medium sweet perry which is now conditioning" and which "will be on sale in 2014".

This we very much look forward to.
